At the Akron Zoo, the more than 2,000 animals that call our zoo home have a story - but few are as moving as that of the white-cheeked gibbons. Your Akron Zoo is a leader in saving this species!
Daily Care
Here under our expert care, our white-cheeked gibbon family lives in one of the largest and most complex Association of Zoos and Aquariums' (AZA) gibbon habitats in the northern United States. Giving them access to an outdoor yard, indoor habitat and multiple behind-the-scenes bedrooms.
Growing Family
Since their arrival in Akron, mom Parker and dad Milo, have welcomed two babies, Lolani and Leuco. For Lorain, being a big sister is an important milestone as it helps her develop skills to be a mother herself someday. Leuco exploring under his mom's watchful eye reminds us why this work matters.
Working Together to Save a Species
Northern white-cheeked gibbons are listed as "Critically Endangered" by the IUCN Red List due to habitat loss, mainly from deforestation to create palm oil plantations. The native population of white-cheeked gibbons has decreased about 80% in the last 50 years.
The Akron Zoo participates in the Gibbon Species Survival Plan (SSP), which is a scientifically managed breeding program that works to ensure a healthy, genetically unique population of white-cheeked gibbons. We also play a leadership role in AZA's Gibbon SAFE program. SAFE stands for Saving Animals from Extinction and focuses the combined expertise of AZA zoos to help save gibbons.
