The Akron Zoo is proud to launch Paws with Purpose, an innovative program that uses mindfulness to build empathy for wildlife and one another. Developed in partnership with Heart to Heart Leadership, the program encourages participants to observe animals, consider their perspectives and reflect on the connections between people and nature.
Research shows that mindfulness can strengthen empathy, allowing individuals to better understand others' experiences. Through a unique dual-cohort model, mentors gain tools to lead with compassion, while teens participate in hands-on activities that promote personal growth.
At a time when Akron is investing in mentorship, mental health and youth development, Paws with Purpose empowers youth to become advocates who inspire empathy within their families, schools and communities.
A generous grant from Woodland Park Zoo's Advancing Empathy Grant Program made this initiative possible.
