*4-Star Green Restaurant

The Akron Zoo was the first zoo to feature a 4-star green restaurant in the U.S. Additionally, the Akron Zoo’s Komodo Kingdom Café was the second restaurant in Ohio to earn the 4-star certified green restaurant ranking, due to its energy-efficiency and sustainable practices.

The “4-star” distinction is determined using a point-based checklist of seven categories: disposables, energy, sustainable food, sustainable furnishings and building, pollution and chemical reduction, waste and water. To earn four stars and the “trailblazer” status, restaurants must tally at least 300 points. The Komodo Kingdom Café currently has 353.42 points.

The café is located inside the Komodo Kingdom Education Building, which is a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified building. The entire building has a low water consumption and reduces greenhouse emissions. Additionally, the café has reduced disposable silverware and trays, employed the use of environmentally friendly cleaning products and actively composted food waste.
