Velociraptor means "swift robber." Their long rear legs contained hollow bones, which allowed them to run up to 25 miles per hour. Scientists suggest their legs allowed them to chase and jump onto prey.

At the end of their long legs was a 3-inch long, curved and sharp talon. This "toe claw" was retractable due to Velociraptor's flexible toe joint, and was held off the ground to ensure it wasn't dulled while walking. Modern studies suggest this claw was likely used to impale and hold onto squirming prey. Velociraptor's serrated teeth were also excellent for trapping prey.

Velociraptors were almost entirely covered in feathers. The long feathers on their arms and the end of their tails helped them balance while running or fighting. Recent studies suggest Velociraptor may have been able to glide or fly for short periods of time, like modern chickens. Other studies suggest they may have used their toe claws for grasping onto and climbing tree limbs. This behavior may further connect the development of modern birds' flight to raptor adaptations.
