Coelophysis was named after its hollow bones. Its name means "hollow form." Coelophysis had long rear legs and a slender body. This combined with their long tail for balance and hollow limbs made it a swift hunter. While their back legs were for running, their front limbs were shorter and ended in three-clawed fingers.

They had a narrow jaw filled with sharp, curved and serrated teeth. Its jaw had a small notch toward the front, which was helpful for grabbing and holding onto squirming or slippery prey. This adaptation has led some scientists to believe Coelophysis may have eaten fish in addition to land animals.
