Ceratosaurus means "horned lizard." Its head was topped with three distinctive crests; two above its eyes and one more prominent crest on its nose. Though we often call it a horn, the nasal crest is an elongated and fused part of the reptile's skull. Scientists believe the nasal crest was too thin to be used as a combat weapon, but some theorize they were used to attract mates or intimidate other dinosaurs.
Ceratosaurus was a large predator in its environment. It walked and ran on its long back limbs. Its arms were shorter, ending in clawed hands it would use to grasp onto prey while hunting. Its teeth were curved to trap prey in its mouth.
