Ankylosaurus means "fused lizard." Its name comes from the large bony plates that covered it from head to tail. These plates protected Ankylosaurus from predators. These reptiles also used the large bony club at the end of their tails to defend themselves against predators. If swung hard enough, their tail could break bones! With its size and heavy-duty protection, Ankylosaurus is often compared to a living tank.

Based on fossils of Ankylosaurus teeth, scientists hypothesize they may not have chewed their food much. Instead, they likely relied on their gut to break food down, similar to modern horses and rhinos. Their nostril placement suggests they may have moved earth to dig around for roots and tubers to eat.
