*4-Star Green Restaurant

The Akron Zoo was the first zoo to feature a 4-star green restaurant in the U.S. Additionally, the Akron Zoo’s Komodo Kingdom Café was the second restaurant in Ohio to earn the 4-star certified green restaurant ranking, due to its energy-efficiency and sustainable practices.

The “4-star” distinction is determined using a point-based checklist of seven categories: disposables, energy, sustainable food, sustainable furnishings and building, pollution and chemical reduction, waste and water. To earn four stars and the “trailblazer” status, restaurants must tally at least 300 points. The Komodo Kingdom Café currently has 341.86 points.

The café is located inside the Komodo Kingdom Education Building, which is a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified building. The entire building has a low water consumption and reduces greenhouse emissions. Additionally, the café has reduced disposable silverware and trays, employed the use of environmentally friendly cleaning products and actively composted food waste.

Allergies/Special Dietary Needs

We recognize the seriousness of food allergies and we do our best to try and accommodate our guests. However, we cannot guarantee 100% allergen-free foods. Our kitchen is not equipped to prepare food separately for guests who are sensitive to certain ingredients. Below is a list of potential allergens as well as some allergen-free items.

Peanut Allergies: We do have nut/tree nut products in-house. We bake cookies and pretzels in the same oven, which could cause cross-contamination. Both our chocolate chip and peanut butter cookies are also processed in plants that use nuts.

Soy Allergies: Our fryers use vegetable oil, which contains soy.

Gluten Allergies: We offer gluten-free buns for both our burgers and hot dogs. Our French fries have a wheat coating, making them a gluten item. A half-salad is recommended as a side option for individuals with gluten sensitivities.

Vegetarians: We offer veggie burgers and salads.

Vegan: Any salad can be made vegan.

** Again, we cannot guarantee 100% allergen-free foods as there is always a risk of cross-contamination. If you have any questions about any specific allergens, please feel free to ask during your visit.
