Many of us are familiar with the feeling of being overwhelmed. However, while most of us are relatively skilled at tuning-out extra sensory information (like the feeling of our clothing or the sounds of a crowd), individuals with sensory processing needs can feel overwhelmed in everyday situations, like visiting the zoo. This is why, for Sensory Processing Awareness Month, we want to share how the Akron Zoo is sensory inclusive and always working to provide a welcoming environment to all individuals, including those with sensory processing needs.
On July 7, 2017, the Akron Zoo became the first zoo in Ohio (and the second in the nation) to become sensory inclusive, as certified by KultureCity, a non-profit organization dedicated to rethinking accessibility, creating acceptance and inclusion for all individuals. To support the sensory initiatives launched in 2017, your Akron Zoo provides training for all zoo staff and volunteers on what sensory processing is, what resources are available here at the Akron Zoo and how to help a guest who might be in sensory overload. There is also signage throughout the park to designate quiet and headphone areas for visitors, a private guest comfort station, and even sensory bags available for checkout for free at the office located in the Welcome Center. Bags include fidget toys, noise cancelling headphones and more. Weighted lap blankets are also available.
In addition to these support resources, the zoo also offers exclusive "Zoothing Hours” throughout the year, when the zoo opens an hour early for individuals with sensory processing needs. This month we will host “Zoothing Boo,” a scaled back version of Boo at the Zoo that is sensory-friendly, with smaller crowds and no noisy inflatables.
No matter your abilities, we hope to see you soon at the Akron Zoo: where YOU belong!
