About Axolotls

Axolotls are neotenic, which means they maintain their juvenile features. They keep their tadpole like dorsal fin that runs the length of their body and have feathery external gills on both sides of their wide head. They breathe through their gills and skin. Larger axolotls may go to the surface of the water to fill their rudimentary lungs with air.

They live in freshwater, low current environments and hide under rocks. They can detect electrical fields which they use to explore their environment and hunt prey. They use their vacuum-like mouth to suck and absorb food.
