The ultimate goal of any zoological breeding program is to be able to care for each animal species forever. Genetic diversity is key to managing populations within zoos and aquariums. Working cooperatively through management programs we can responsibly breed and care for endangered species to ensure genetic diversity well into the future.
The Akron Zoo is a member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and currently participates in 45 managed breeding programs, or Species Survival Plans (SSP's).
