Hope for the Wild
Thursday, May 11, 2017
6 - 9 p.m.
Join us for a unique opportunity to hear from Conservationist Guy Western from Rebuilding the Pride, and learn about the zoo’s role in global conservation efforts. Akron Zoo President & CEO Doug Piekarz will also give a brief overview of the importance of species conservation. Visit the zoo’s exhibits and enjoy good food and entertainment.
Guy Western is a conservationist from the South Rift of Kenya and has been instrumental with a successful community based conservation program called Rebuilding the Pride. Rebuilding the Pride is primarily focused on lion conservation through the positive coexistence of farmers and predators, mainly lions, who may be a challenge to the farmer’s livelihood. Guy and his team work with the local people to not only educate them, but have engaged with them to help with conservation efforts.
The program also organized a Conflict Response Team to alleviate conflicts between people and lions. When a farmer must move through areas that may have lions, they call on Rebuilding the Pride to accompany them. The team also helps find and rescue lost livestock that would have otherwise fallen victim to predation.
Thanks to these efforts, lion populations are growing on the Olkirimatian and Shompole ranches. Once down to a low of about 10 known lions in the area, the population is now estimated to be nearly 70. The prides have been producing cubs and new lions are moving in from surrounding areas.
The Akron Zoo is proud to support this effort, as 1 of only 2 zoos in the United Stated to support Guy & Rebuilding the Pride.

The day is action packed with special emcees and visits from some of the zoo’s animals.

Funds raised at Snow Bowl are vital to the Akron Zoo.
