ZOO INTERNSHIPS
The Akron Zoological Park is pleased to offer internship opportunities in the Communication and Education Departments. We are seeking highly motivated individuals that are looking for experience in the zoo field. Good public speaking skills and a sense of humor are a must for all internships.  Applicants must be actively enrolled in college, or a recent (within one year) college graduate. Preference is given to those studying a major relating to the internship. Internships are unpaid and housing, transportation and background check fees are the responsibility of the intern.

Communication Internship
(One position available during each semester)

The Akron Zoo is seeking a highly motivated individual that is looking for experience in the Communications/Marketing/Public Relations/Special Events field. Good communication, computer and writing skills are a must. Applicants must be actively enrolled in college, or a recent college graduate. Preference is given to those studying a major relating to the internship. Interns must be available to up to 20 hours per week, including some weekend days to assist with events.  

Development Internship
(One position available each semester)

The Development Intern assists the Development Department in the planning and implementation of fundraising special events, donor events, research, publications, writing and various other tasks to support the fundraising and communications goals and objectives of the Akron Zoo. The intern should possess skills in written and oral communications, be well organized and have the ability to relate to a wide variety of individuals, from volunteers to professionals. Experience with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel a must. Basic design experience preferred. The intern must be able to work a minimum of 15 hours a week.  Some evening and weekend hours may be requested.  Summer interns are required to work Summer Safari and Spring interns are required to work Snow Bowl.


Animal Ambassador Internship - Application deadline: February 5, 2016
(One position available from April to September)

The Animal Ambassador Internship will provide an in-depth educational and learning experience to students looking to pursue a career in conservation, animal training, zoos, wildlife facilities, and environmental careers. Interns must be able to consistently be available 4 days per week and at least 4 to 6 hours per day to establish a good relationship with the zoo’s Animal Ambassador Collection. Interns will report to the Education Manager. Applicants must be actively enrolled in college, or a recent (within one year) college graduate. Preference is given to Juniors, Seniors, and Graduate students in a related major. Prior knowledge of basic operant conditioning and training is preferred. Applicants must be able to lift 50 lbs on a daily basis since this position requires lifting and carrying kennels, perching, large enrichment items and show props. Prior animal handling experience is required for this internship.

Graphic Design Internship
(One position available per semester)

Graphic Design Interns must be available at least 10 hours a week and have knowledge of graphic design software, including Adobe PageMaker and Adobe Creative Suite 2. Interns will assist the education department as well as other departments in the design of brochures, educational booklets, flyers, media announcements, video media and other written communication.

General Education Internship
(One position available during the spring & fall semesters)

General Education Interns must be available at least 20 hours a week and have knowledge of curriculum development. Interns will have the opportunity to contribute to the development and evaluation of new curriculum, including outreach and on-grounds programming, and assist with project research and data analysis.

Teen Volunteer Program Internship 
(Two positions available May - August)

Teen Volunteer Program Interns must contribute at least 32 hours a week for at least 3 months, including one weekend day and three weekdays. They should have experience with, or be comfortable, in public speaking. Previous work or volunteer experience with teens 14 – 18 years of age is preferred. Interns will assist in the training of the zoo’s teen volunteers; they will go through the same training as the teens in order to know program parameters. They will coordinate scheduling of teens, and conduct meetings as needed. Interns will also have the opportunity to plan and provide new on-grounds educational displays for zoo visitors. While a background in biology is not needed, interns will be trained with marine animals such as horseshoe crabs and stingrays while helping and monitoring teen volunteers at the Touch Tank. Teen Volunteer Program Interns will report to the Volunteer Manager. Applicants must be actively enrolled in college or a recent college graduate (within one year). Preferance will be given to juniors, seniors, and graduate students in a related major. Applicants must be available in May for the following dates for training: May 14th, 18th, 21st, and 26th. The Akron Zoo Will assist students in earning class credit for their internship. A background check will be required.

ZooCamp Internship - Application deadline: April 18, 2016

(Four to six positions available during the summer semester, June to mid-August) 

ZooCamp is a summer program for 5 – 15 year olds covering a variety of topics. The ZooCamp Internship will provide an in-depth learning experience to students looking to pursue a career in education, conservation, zoos, non-profit organizations, and environmental careers. Interns will learn classrooms management skills, development and evaluation of curriculum techniques, and assist camp staff with animal encounters. They will report to the Education Manager.

ZooCamp Intern applicants must be actively enrolled in college or a recent college graduate (within one year). They must be able to work a minimum of 32 hours per week and have a working knowledge of curriculum development. Prior work or volunteer experience working with children is preferred, but not required. Applicants myst be available for training in late May. Special scheduling considerations are given to students enrolled in a college outside of the Akron area.

Preferance is given to juniors, seniors, and graduate students in a related major.
