ZOO INTERNSHIPS
The Akron Zoological Park is pleased to offer internship opportunities in the Communication and Education Departments. We are seeking highly motivated individuals that are looking for experience in the zoo field. Good public speaking skills and a sense of humor are a must for all internships.  Applicants must be actively enrolled in college, or a recent college graduate. Preference is given to those studying a major relating to the internship. Internships are unpaid and housing, transportation and background check fees are the responsibility of the intern. 

 

Communication Internship - 

(One position available during each semester)

The Akron Zoo is seeking a highly motivated individual that is looking for experience in the Communications/Marketing/Public Relations/Special Events/Development field. Good communication, computer and writing skills are a must. Applicants must be actively enrolled in college, or a recent college graduate. Preference is given to those studying a major relating to the internship. Interns must be available to up to 20 hours per week, including some weekend days to assist with events.  

Animal Training and Enrichment Internship - Not Available 2015

(One position available during the summer semester only)

Animal Enrichment and Training Interns must be able to consistently be available 4 days per week and at least 4 – 6 hours per day to establish a good relationship with the zoo’s education animals. Some of the responsibilities of the intern include providing enrichment for the animals, presenting animal encounters to the public, researching and reviewing enrichment data, and assisting education staff in the training of show animals, and show preparations. Prior knowledge of basic operant conditioning and training is preferred. Applicants must be able to lift 50 lbs on a daily basis since this position requires lifting and carrying kennels, perching, large enrichment items and show props. Prior animal handling experience is required for this internship. 

General Education Internship

(One position available during the spring & fall semesters)

General Education Interns must be available at least 20 hours a week and have knowledge of curriculum development. Interns will have the opportunity to contribute to the development and evaluation of new curriculum, including distance learning, outreach and on-grounds programming and assist with project research and data analysis. 

Graphic Design Internship                                          

(One position available per semester)

Graphic Design Interns must be available at least 10 hours a week and have knowledge of graphic design software, including Adobe PageMaker and Adobe Creative Suite 2. Interns will assist the education department as well as other departments in the design of brochures, educational booklets, flyers, media announcements, video media and other written communication.

Teen Volunteer Program Internship          

(Two positions available during late spring - summer)

Teen Volunteer Program Interns must contribute at least 32 hours a week and either have experience with, or be comfortable, in public speaking. Previous work or volunteer experience with teens 14 – 18 years of age is preferred. Interns will assist in the training of the zoo’s teen volunteers; coordinate scheduling of teens, and conduct meetings as needed. Interns will also have the opportunity to plan and provide new on-grounds educational displays for zoo visitors. While a background in biology is not needed, interns will be trained with marine animals such as horseshoe crabs and stingrays while helping and monitoring teen volunteers at the Touch Tank.

ZooCamp Internship

(Four – six positions available during the summer semester)

ZooCamp is a summer program for 6 – 16 year olds. A variety of topics are offered throughout the summer. ZooCamp Interns must be able to volunteer a minimum of 32 hours per week and have a working knowledge of curriculum development. Interns will have the opportunity to contribute to the development and evaluation of new ZooCamp curriculum and assist camp staff with educational activities, crafts, provide animal encounters and learn classroom management skills.

2015 Internship Dates:

Spring: Mid-January to early-May        
Summer: Mid-May to mid-August        
Fall: Mid-August to early-December

The Animal Training & Enrichment, General Education, ZooCamp, Guest Experience and Animal Enrichment Team Interns must have an updated TB and tetanus shot and provide proof of the same. All interns are encouraged to seek college credit from their university. Background checks are $15.95
