Educational Internship Opportunities
The Education department is pleased to offer several internship opportunities. We are seeking highly motivated individuals that are looking for experience in the zoo field. Good public speaking skills and a sense of humor are a must for all internships. Applicants must be actively enrolled in college, or a recent (within one year) college graduate. Preference is given to those studying a major relating to the internship. Internships are unpaid, however a stipend will be awarded to successful interns at the conclusion of their internship. Housing, transportation and background check fees are the responsibility of the intern.
General Education Internship
One position available during the spring & fall semesters
General Education Interns must be available at least 20 hours a week and have knowledge of curriculum development. Interns will have the opportunity to contribute to the development and evaluation of new curriculum, including outreach and on-grounds programming, and assist with project research and data analysis. There is no animal handling or husbandry experience with this internship.
Teen Volunteer Program Internship
Two positions available April - August
Teen Volunteer Program Interns must contribute at least 32 hours a week for at least 3 months, including one weekend day and three weekdays. They should have experience with, or be comfortable, in public speaking. Previous work or volunteer experience with teens 13 – 18 years of age is preferred.
Interns will assist in the training of the zoo’s teen volunteers; they will go through the same training as the teens in order to know program parameters. They will coordinate scheduling of teens, and conduct daily meetings as needed. Interns will also have the opportunity to plan and provide new on-grounds educational activities for zoo visitors. While a background in biology is not needed, interns will be trained to present marine invertebrates while helping and monitoring teen volunteers at the Learning Lab.
Teen Volunteer Program Interns will report to the Volunteer Manager. Applicants must be actively enrolled in college or a recent college graduate (within one year). Preference will be given to juniors, seniors, and graduate students in a related major. Applicants must be available in April for training. Dates to be given during interview process. The Akron Zoo will assist students in earning class credit for their internship. A background check and current vaccination record including TB and tetanus will be required and are the responsibility of the intern.
Six to eight positions available during the summer semester, late May to mid-August
ZooCamp is a summer program for 5 – 15 year olds covering a variety of topics. The ZooCamp Internship will provide an in-depth learning experience to students looking to pursue a career in education, conservation, zoos, non-profit organizations, and environmental careers. Interns will learn classroom management skills, development and evaluation of curriculum techniques, and assist camp staff with animal encounters.
ZooCamp Intern applicants must be actively enrolled in college or a recent college graduate (within one year). They must be able to work a minimum of 32 hours per week and have a working knowledge of curriculum development. Prior work or volunteer experience working with children is preferred, but not required. Applicants must be available for training in late May. Special scheduling considerations are given to students enrolled in a college outside of the Akron area. Preference is given to juniors, seniors, and graduate students in a related major.

All interns are encouraged to seek college credit from their university. Background checks are $18.80.
