4-Star Green Restaurant

Green Restaurant

The Akron Zoo was the first zoo to have a 4-star green restaurant in the U.S. Only 12 restaurants in the State of Ohio are Green Restaurant Association-certified. Of those, the Akron Zoo’s Komodo Kingdom Café is the second restaurant to earn the 4-star certified green restaurant ranking because of its energy-efficiency and sustainable practices.

The “4 star” distinction is determined using a point-based checklist of seven categories: disposables, energy, sustainable food, sustainable furnishings and building, pollution and chemical reduction, waste and water. To earn four stars and the “trailblazer” status, restaurants must tally at least 300 points. The Komodo Kingdom Café currently has 335 points.

The café is located inside the Komodo Kingdom Education Building, which is a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified building. Along with the entire building using less water and reducing greenhouse emissions, the café has reduced the amount of throw away silverware and trays, uses environmentally friendly cleaning products and actively composts food waste.

Allergies/Special Dietary Needs

We recognize the seriousness of food allergies and we do our best to try and accommodate our guests, however, we cannot guarantee 100% allergen-free foods. Our kitchen is not equipped to prepare food separately for guests who are sensitive to certain ingredients. Below is a list of potential allergens as well as some allergen free items.

Peanut Allergies: We do have nut/tree nut products in house. We bake cookies and pretzels in the same oven which could cause cross contamination. Both our chocolate chip and peanut butter cookies are also processed in plants that use nuts.

Soy Allergies: We fry with vegetable oil that contains soy.

Gluten Allergies: We offer gluten-free buns for both our burgers and hot dogs. Our French fries have a wheat coating, making them a gluten item. A half-salad is recommended as the side option for gluten sensitivities.

Vegetarians: We offer veggie burgers, salads, fruit cups and veggie cups.

Vegan: Any salad can be made vegan.

** Again, we cannot guarantee 100% allergen-free foods as there is always a risk of cross contamination. If you have any questions about any specific allergens, please feel free to contact our Food & Beverage Supervisor.

Akron Zoo and Hattie’s Partnership

test image

The Akron Zoo and Hattie Larlham partnered in 2014 creating the Hattie’s Gardens at the Akron Zoo. Hattie’s Gardens have transformed two acres of unused land at the Akron Zoo into sustainable gardens that grow chemical-free produce for Akron and Northeast Ohio residents. The partnership focuses on making healthy eating possible through accessibility, affordability and environmental responsibility. Hattie’s Gardens is a Hattie Larlham vocational program that employs adults with developmental disabilities.

Hattie’s Gardens at the Akron Zoo is a partnership dedicated to the health and environment of the community. In addition to supplying food for local residents, fresh produce is supplied to the Akron Zoo’s Komodo Kingdom Café for its visitors.

Hattie’s Gardens at the Akron Zoo is located at 389 Edgewood Avenue, Akron, Ohio 44307. The garden is located outside the zoo perimeter fence, but on adjacent property owned by the zoo.
