The Waterfowl, or Anseriformes, TAG is a group of biologists, educators, and zoo professionals working for the conservation of waterfowl around the world. This group, a subcommittee of the AZA, has developed a plan for promoting waterfowl. This plan includes scientific research, educational projects, financial and staff support for in situ conservation projects, and staff development for AZA organizations that house waterfowl.
The Waterfowl TAG hopes to increase public understanding of the importance of waterfowl, their habitats, and their relationship to the environment. The TAG works to protect all waterfowl. However, a few species, which have important conservation messages, are highlighted. The white winged wood duck is the first and only waterfowl Species Survival Plan (SSP). The trumpeter swan represents a population of migratory waterfowl that are a part of an on-going conservation success story. The Venezuelan torrent duck represents a species that requires in situ conservation efforts. Fact sheets and information about these species can be obtained from the TAG. |
